AMERICAN CHEER LEADERS TO HEAD
SYDNEY EASTER MARCH

80 American cheerleaders will join with traditional Easter donkeys and a sea of green and gold balloons to celebrate an Aussie Easter in the streets of Sydney.

With high kicks, pom poms and aerial lifts, over 80 of America's most talented and delightful cheer leaders will head up Easter Celebrations in Sydney this Sunday. The United Cheer Association have been selecting the most talented girls from across America to send to Australia over the last three years.

In previous years the girls have performed at the Royal Easter Show, but after hearing about our unique Aussie Easter Celebration at the Opera House they became enthusiastic about joining us. These remarkable gifted performers believe it's one way they can contribute to the spirit of Easter celebrations in Sydney. The girls are expected to turn heads with their tightly choreographed routines set to the music "Dancing in the Streets".

On Sunday 15th April they will play a key role in the Easter Parade to the Opera House. They will lead the Hyde Park march which will start at 2.10 pm. At the conclusion of the Easter Celebration at the Opera House at about 4.00 pm, they will once again give another brilliant performance.

The Easter March will leave from three points of the city and merge into two marches as they arrive at the Opera House forecourt.

  • Commissioner Brian Morgan from the Salvation Army will give the official welcome.
  • Deacon Stavros Karvellas from the Greek Orthodox Church will then give the most ancient Easter Greeting. (A feature of Easter 2001 is that it's one of the unique years in which the eastern & western Churches celebrate Easter together).
  • The Easter Message will be given by the new Anglican Bishop of South Sydney Rob Forsythe.
  • An energetic Fijian Youth Choir and an exciting Hip, Hop Dance Group will perform.

A touching moment is expected to be when Dr Chris Walker will release the pigeons representing prayer on behalf of his frail aged father, the Reverend Sir Alan Walker (who has been at every Easter March since the inception 12 years ago).

Every capital city Easter March will also see the farewelling of the Indigenous, Anglo-Celtic and students from Ethnic backgrounds as they pilgrimage to Uluru on a journey of reconciliation and community building.

The weather is promising to be fine so we are expecting the backdrop of the Opera House and the Harbour to frame a truly beautiful and uplifting Easter Sunday Celebration.
