Kids to join stars at Stadium Australia for international spectacular Thousands of school children from across Australia will perform for tens of thousands of marchers who will converge on Stadium Australia on June 10 as part of the Christian church’s international millennial celebration, billed as the biggest march of celebration in history. The Stadium entertainment features a star-studded line up of performers, including the Don Burrows Quartet, Golden guitar winner Adam Brand and Venetta Fields, fresh from her tour with Barbra Striesand. Australia’s most recent Grammy Award winner, the US based gospel artist Rebecca St James, will be flying in for the day. They will be joined by 10,000 school children who will perform in a massed choir, a pipe band, and as dancers and flashcard holders. Aboriginal elders are working to bring representatives from major regions across the country to welcome marchers as they arrive. The celebration will also involve a giant puppet show, a parade of nations, skydivers and an evening dance spectacular that concludes with a colourful fireworks display. “Celebrating 2000” will be linked with a Global March involving over ten million people in 115 countries across the world. The entire day will be broadcast live on Cable TV and already overseas networks are showing interest in a satellite feed. BBC TV will be on hand to cover the event. The people of Snowtown in South Australia, made infamous for its bank vault discovery of murder victims, are rallying behind their kids to fund them to participate in the event. Aboriginal and the Torres Strait Islander children from northern Queensland will perform alongside internationally renown didgeridoo maestro Adrian Ross, a performer at Corroboree 2000. Other school children are busing in from as far away as Geraldton in Western Australia to participate in this once in a lifetime event. “Celebrating 2000” is the Australian Churches yearlong millennial celebration of the birth of Christ. It is not organised by any one church, but is co-ordinated by representatives of every participating church under the “Awakening 2000” banner and includes activities around the Torch Run and Opening Night Ceremony. According to National Coordinator, Mal Garvin, “The colour, the harmony, the diversity, the youth choir with thousands, the indigenous dancers, performers who are household names and the climactic fireworks display will all say, “Welcome to the church of the new millennium.” A youth concert will be run from dusk to dawn in the nearby Showground Exhibition Hall and an all night vigil will see thousands praying for those around the world who are still marching and a regular news service broadcasting on the hour from marches that are still underway around the globe.
